Officials are reminding Maryland residents to make sure their cars are registered with the state.

According to Maryland law, residents must register their vehicles within 60 days of moving to the state, but starting Oct. 1, residents could see new enforcement and fines for unregistered cars.

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) launched its Plate Where You Live campaign to remind drivers of the changes coming later this year.

Officials said that under new enforcement, vehicles with out-of-state tags will first be given a written warning, allowing the owner 60 days to register the vehicle or apply for exemptions. After those 60 days, owners will be fined $7 a day for up to 60 days — meaning fines could reach as high as $420.
