The Trump administration cannot reverse course on a project to move the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) headquarters to a D.C. suburb in Maryland, a federal judge in Maryland ruled on Monday.
A judge issued the ruling in favor of Prince George’s County and Maryland officials, permanently blocking the administration’s plan from July 2025 to move the law enforcement agency to offices at the Ronald Reagan Building in D.C.
Plans to move the FBI Headquarters from its aging offices at the J Edgar Hoover Building to a new location in Greenbelt, Md., were initially approved by the General Services Administration. The GSA later selected the Ronald Reagan Building as its new home after President Donald Trump said he would cancel the Greenbelt project in early 2025.
The judge struck down the decision to move the FBI headquarters to the Ronald Reagan Building and the FBI’s move to redirect over $500 million in funds intended for the Maryland project. In an opinion, the judge said Maryland and Prince George’s County leaders showed that canceling the project would deprive them of long-term economic benefits.
