For years, Waymo has struggled to operate commercially in the District. With its future uncertain in the U.S. capital, the robotaxi company also is setting its sights on Northern Virginia.
The San Francisco-based autonomous-vehicle company began mapping roads in Northern Virginia a few months ago, according to spokesman Ethan Teicher. Commercial autonomous vehicles are not legal in Virginia, so Waymo is limited to testing with human drivers behind the wheel.
“This effort is an important preparatory step for operating in the state but we don’t have any plans to share. We are seeking legislative clarity in Virginia, and working to bring the safety and mobility benefits of our service to Washington, D.C.,” Teicher said in a statement. The company also is testing in Baltimore.
