Military medical providers will begin routinely screening older troops for low testosterone during annual health assessments, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced last week, saying the move is intended to improve troops’ health, resilience and battlefield readiness.

The test will be added to yearly health assessments for active-duty, National Guard and Reserve members age 30 and older, Hegseth said, affecting about one-third of the active-duty force alone. Troops under 30 will also be able to opt in.

“While we invest heavily in our weapon systems, platforms, and gear, our most decisive tactical advantage will always be the individual warfighter,” Hegseth said in a video posted to social media. “We have a sacred duty to maintain that advantage, which is why we must constantly look for new ways to optimize your performance, your resilience, and your long-term health.”

“It’s not about artificial enhancement,” he added. “It’s about restoring and optimizing your natural capabilities, protecting your longevity, and ensuring you have the biological foundation required to sustain the fight.”
