The Washington Football Team and United Airlines (NASDAQ: UAL) are teaming up to provide local Black-owned businesses in the D.C., Maryland and Virginia with Covid relief grants, they said Thursday. They plan to give five grants for a total of $25,000 to businesses in the Washington Football Team Black Engagement Network’s (B.E.N.) Shop Black Directory.
The team launched B.E.N. in June 2020, and the network launched the Shop Black initiative in November to spotlight local Black-owned restaurants, apparel shops, and health and wellness centers, among other businesses. So far, the directory has 97 businesses, including Pinnacle HR Consulting LLC, Walker Realtors, Niko’s Spiked Gelato and others. The directory is continuing to accept members, who will receive updates on future programs and grant opportunities.
“We know that Black entrepreneurs face many barriers when it comes to running their businesses and recognize that the last year has been particularly tough on small, minority-owned businesses,” Doug Williams, senior adviser to Washington Football Team President Jason Wright, said in a statement. “Which is why we are excited to partner with United to provide additional resources and support for members of our Shop Black Directory.”
