Howard University is putting up a new mixed-use development in place of a parking lot.
The university and its real estate partners, led by Lowe, are clearing the way for 525,000 square feet of new apartments and retail space adjacent to its campus. The project, for now dubbed East Towers, will turn 1.85 acres of university parking lots located at 2251 Sherman Ave. NW and 2047 Ninth St. NW into a 10-story building with up to 500 apartments, 27,000 square feet of retail and 246 underground parking spaces.
The units will range from studios to two-bedrooms, and the building’s amenities will include a club room, fitness center, a rooftop patio and a pool. Between 40 and 60 units will be designated as affordable. The project will also include a 25-foot-wide public plaza marking the future extension of W Street NW to better connect the university the surrounding neighborhood.
