A bill in Richmond that would open up the possibility for a major casino-anchored entertainment district in Tysons took a decisive leap forward Tuesday, clearing the Virginia Senate by a healthy margin and gaining momentum as it heads now to the House.

SB-982, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, passed by a 24-16 vote with majorities of both Democrats and Republicans in support. It’s a big step, with similar bills in the past two consecutive years dying in committee. The bill heads Wednesday to the House of Delegates, where its fate is uncertain.

Surovell’s bill, if it ultimately becomes law, wouldn’t guarantee a casino would get built or specify exactly where, but would authorize local lawmakers in Fairfax County to call a countywide referendum on the matter. Comstock Cos. has proposed a huge casino-anchored mixed-use “entertainment district” at the Spring Hill Metro station, but proposals at other sites could yet come forward.
