A new plan from a Democratic senator would eliminate federal income tax for about half of all U.S. workers.
The Washington Post reported Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Maryland, is expected to unveil his plan in the coming week. Under the proposal, workers making at or below a “living wage” – determined to be $46,000 for a taxpayer filing individually or $92,000 for a married couple filing jointly – would not have to pay federal income taxes.
The change would boost the number of people not paying federal income tax from 37 million to 66 million.
Other cuts would cover additional middle-class workers, though they would not eliminate the taxes.
The measure would be funded by a new surcharge on millionaires that would raise up to $1.5 trillion over the next decade, The Post reported.
