Maryland transportation officials have homed in on a plan to expand the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270 that includes adding four toll lanes to each roadway.
The Washington Post reports the state has identified the four-lane additions as its “preferred option” in the environmental review it released on the project. It had also considered creating two reversible toll lanes on the span, which includes the American Legion Bridge connecting Maryland with Virginia. The bridge would also get a new pedestrian and bike path under this scenario.
Interstate 270 would also get four toll lanes, but only two additional lanes would need to be built between the Beltway and I-370, because the existing high-occupancy vehicle lanes on each side would become a toll lane. Extension of the lanes to Frederick is further out in the planning process, the Post reported.
