The casino industry in Maryland marked one of its strongest months ever in December as the state’s nascent sports betting industry rolled out a long-awaited launch.
Maryland’s six casinos collectively generated $172.9 million last month, a 44.9% year-over-year increase and the second-best month since the first casino opened in the state more than a decade ago. The December revenue trailed only the numbers from July 2021, when casinos pulled in $180.1 million.
Maryland Lottery and Gaming Director John Martin attributed the high earnings in part to the new sportsbooks that launched last month at several local casinos. MGM National Harbor was the first to start accepting sports wagers on Dec. 9, followed a day later by Baltimore’s Horseshoe Casino and Live Casino & Hotel in Hanover.
