The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Thursday to approve Prince George’s County Del. Erek Barron to become Maryland’s next U.S. attorney, sending his nomination to the Senate floor.
Barron, 47, would be the first Black person to hold the post, and the first Democrat in 20 years.
The committee approved Barron on a voice vote along with a half-dozen other U.S. attorney nominees from other states.
The panel delayed voting on one such appointee — Rachael S. Rollins of Massachusetts. Sen. Tom Cotton, an Arkansas Republican, has questioned the record and some public comments of Rollins, who is the Suffolk County district attorney. She would be the first Black woman to serve as U.S. attorney in Massachusetts.
