The proposed Capitals and Wizards sports arena in Alexandria is officially dead.

The city announced Wednesday afternoon that it has ended negotiations with Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which is owned by billionaire sports mogul Ted Leonsis.

“We are disappointed this proposal was not able to be thoughtfully considered on its merits by legislators, stakeholders and ultimately now by our community,” Alexandria Mayor Justin Wilson said in a video message. “Instead it got caught up in partisan warfare in Richmond. As a result the city of Alexandria will no longer be considering the current proposal.”

There’s no official word on what Monumental Sports will do now, but veteran D.C. journalist Tom Sherwood posted Wednesday afternoon on X that the company near a deal with Mayor Muriel Bowser to stay at Capital One Arena in downtown D.C. A press announcement is reportedly planned for 5 p.m. at Capital One.
