The Baltimore/Washington, D.C. gaming industry is the third largest in the country as of 2020, following only two of the country’s most iconic destinations for gambling, Las Vegas and Atlantic City.
Revenue from Baltimore/D.C.-area commercial casinos rose above that of casinos in the Chicagoland area last year, boosting the market into third place, according to a new annual report from the American Gaming Association.
The shift came despite a sharp decrease in revenues among casinos in the area and across the country due to Covid-19 closures and restrictions. Maryland casinos reported $1.23 billion in revenue in 2020, a more than 30% tumble, while West Virginia’s five commercial casinos, also counted as part of the Baltimore/D.C. market, saw $435.5 million in revenue, a nearly 31% drop.
