Adventist HealthCare’s effort to replace its southern Prince George’s County hospital is losing its biggest champion, raising the question: Will it still happen?
Eunmee Shim, the hospital’s outgoing president leading the charge to build a new Fort Washington Medical Center, says the health system intends to advance the project despite her plans to leave at the end of the year.
“The commitment to transform this community and build a new hospital, and create better access and a better future for the residents — it’s not just coming from me, it’s coming from Adventist HealthCare,” Shim told me. “So that commitment will continue.”
It’s no secret the existing facility is insufficient to continue serving the patients who rely on its care, at 61,778 square feet and 54 beds. But bringing a new facility to life requires securing a whopping $150 million from Maryland. It hasn’t happened yet, and there’s no guarantee it will.
