In a span of just a few years, Lanham education technology company 2U Inc. was growing so fast that it nearly doubled its office space at 7900 Harkins Road to more than 309,000 square feet.
But now the company, which recently filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and whose shares stopped trading on the Nasdaq this month, is giving up much of the space years before its lease expires.
2U, which had already undergone several rounds of downsizing, said in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing this week that it has “further reduced its occupancy” at the Lanham facility. It did not specify by how much it had reduced its space, saying only that it “took steps to reject several operating leases in connection” with the Chapter 11 on July 25. 2U expects the bankruptcy court will make a decision about the leases at a Sept. 6 hearing.
2U declined to comment further on the reduction.
