For Mitchell Trellis, the launch of recreational cannabis in Maryland on July 1 represents the opportunity to ignite a billion-dollar industry after years of preparation.
“This is not the finish line,” said Trellis, who owns the Remedy dispensaries in Baltimore and Columbia. “It’s the starting line.”
Trellis has increased staff at his two dispensaries ahead of the start of the recreational sales, when consumers will be able to walk into dispensaries across Maryland and buy cannabis like they’re buying a six-pack of beer or a pack of cigarettes.
But impact of recreational sales will be felt well beyond the state’s dispensaries and growing operations. Security firms will be charged with safeguarding the products, technology companies will try to give consumers more tools to understand cannabis consumption and health care institutions are racing to understand the wider impacts of cannabis on public health.
