The University of Maryland, Baltimore is planning to build a 130,000-square-foot school of social work near Lexington Market as part of an effort to remake the area.
The $121 million project on the 600 block of West Lexington Street is just a slice of UMB’s ambitious plans. The school has been slowly acquiring retail storefronts and other buildings around Lexington Market for years, with plans to develop some areas for campus improvements as well as offer redevelopment opportunities to private developers.
The current school of social work is located about three blocks south on West Redwood Drive and is spread out across six buildings, including two off-campus spaces that UMB rents, said Luke Mowbray, director of real estate, planning and space management at UMB. The school will enroll around 925 students and employ 535 staff and 249 faculty once it opens in July 2027, he added. UMB has not hired an architect for the building but has already cleared the site and plans to start the design process in March, with construction to start in 2024.
