The State of Maryland faces some daunting fiscal challenges in the next few years, much of it tied to transportation infrastructure.
That is what a Hagerstown audience of business and community leaders heard today from the Maryland Chamber of Commerce.
The state has pressing needs for highway construction and new railways. With an anticipated phaseout of the gas tax as electric vehicles come online, creative approaches are needed to raise revenue.
“From the business community perspective we need to have a good transportation system,” said Andrew Griffin, senior vice president for government affairs at the chamber. “We need to move people and goods and do it in a way that’s competitive with the investments we see in Virginia and Pennsylvania.”
Griffin said the creation of regional authorities throughout Maryland may be needed to impose taxes and fees, along with those already being collected by the state, counties and localities.
