The Arena Football League is coming to Baltimore.
Ted Leonsis, the CEO of Monumental Sports and Entertainment, announced Monday he is bringing a team to Baltimore in 2017, the same time he launches a team in Washington, D.C.. The new, yet-to-be-named Baltimore team will play in the 14,000-seat Royal Farms Arena. The AFL schedule runs between April and August.
Appearing on WTOP radio Monday morning, Leonsis, who also owns the Washington Wizards in the NBA and Washington Capitals in the NHL, said the D.C. team, named the Valor, will be under the same ownership as the Baltimore franchise, but will have separate management and coaching staffs.
Leonsis said the team will be given a name in the next 30 days.
“I want to show commitment to the league, commitment to our players, commitment to the city of Baltimore,” Leonsis told WTOP.
