Maryland continues to rank among the bottom 10 states in the U.S. for its business tax climate, according to the latest report by the Tax Foundation.
The annual “State Business Tax Climate Index” ranked Maryland No. 43, one spot worse than last year when the state ranked No. 42. Maryland has long been criticized by business advocates for its tax policies and fostering what some deem to be an unfriendly business environment.
Like Maryland, other states ranking at the bottom of the list are strongholds for the Democratic Party. New Jersey, New York and California have the three worst tax climates, according to the report. The Tax Foundation noted that states in the bottom 10 tend to have a “number of afflictions in common,” particularly complex taxes with comparatively high rates.
Among individual categories Maryland had the following rankings:
No. 32 for corporate taxes
No. 45 for individual income tax
No. 19 for sales tax
No. 42 for property tax
No. 33 for unemployment insurance tax
