Negotiations on a stadium lease agreement between the Baltimore Orioles and the state of Maryland are still underway.
Fans cheered as a surprise announcement appeared on the scoreboard at a September Thursday night game at Camden Yards. Officials “agreed to a deal that will keep the Orioles in Baltimore and at Camden Yards for at least the next 30 years,” the announcement said.
That celebration may have been premature. There’s still no lease deal between the state and Orioles CEO John Angelos, 11 News learned Tuesday. Instead, there’s a memorandum of understanding in place as negotiations continue.
“My message to the public is, it’s everyone’s intention for the Orioles to remain in Baltimore for a very long time,” said Michael Franz, executive director of the Maryland Stadium Authority.
The board met for the last time this year on Tuesday, but the Orioles lease agreement was not on the agenda.
The memorandum allows Angelos to create new revenue streams, including development around Camden Yards.
