Maryland’s Board of Public Works approved spending $106 million on school improvements in Baltimore — the next step in a $1 billion overhaul of city schools.
The state’s spending panel gave its approval to five contract requests from the Maryland Stadium Authority. The authority is overseeing a majority of the school renovations — about 28 of the city’s most dilapidated schools — under an agreement struck by the state, city and public schools in 2013.
Schools specifically targeted in the board’s vote Wednesday include $38.5 million to replace the Academy of College and Career Exploration at Robert Poole Middle School in Roosevelt Park, $36.8 million to replace Arundel Elementary/Middle School in Cherry Hill and $28.3 million to replace John Eager Howard Elementary School in Bolton Hill.
The board also approved $2.9 million for pre-construction work to replace Patterson High School in East Baltimore.
