The fate of D.C.’s decrepit Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium and the land it sits upon is scheduled for discussion Tuesday before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
The bill under consideration passed the House of Representatives 348-55 in February. The Senate Committee could take action, bringing the bill before the full Senate for a vote before the end of the year.
However, 7News has learned Senator Mike Lee (R-UT) plans to introduce an amendment that would require the federal government to pay full market value for use of the land.
“As the current bill stands, it would be a transfer for 100 years at no cost,” said Rep. Glenn Ivey (D-MD). “I think that’s unfair to American taxpayers. It’s also unfair to us here in Maryland. We want to have a level playing field to compete for keeping the team. Subsidizing the stadium in D.C. in that amount, which would be millions of dollars, for a 100-year term, I think is completely unfair.”
