A key Senate committee on Thursday approved an appropriations bill that includes funding for a new FBI headquarters.
The proposed fiscal year 2025 appropriations measure, which emerged from the financial services and general government subcommittee, if adopted into law, would provide $375 million for the FBI’s planned move from the decrepit Hoover Building in downtown D.C. to a 61-acre, $4 billion campus by the Greenbelt Metro station.
But that’s a massive if — even if it does clear the full Senate, it is unlikely to get through the GOP-controlled House of Representatives. Not only has President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for president, already declared the move dead if he wins in November, but many from his party have taken issue with the multibillion project on principal.
“Despite Republican theatrics in the House, I was proud to secure this funding on a bipartisan basis within our Subcommittee bill — and was glad to receive bipartisan support from the full Committee for its passage,” Sen. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., chairman of the financial services and general government subcommittee, said in a statement. “From day one, moving forward on this has been a top priority of mine — and I’m committed to keeping it on track in order to deliver the new headquarters that our nation’s law enforcement deserves.”
