The mayor of a small Maryland city who sparked a series of controversies over his long tenure, including most recently being stripped of his power after a sexual harassment complaint, narrowly won a fifth term Monday.
Seat Pleasant Mayor Eugene Grant defeated former city employee Gigi Riley, who launched her campaign more than a year ago with strong support from business owners with whom Grant had clashed — at one point after he raised taxes on select businesses by 800 percent.
Grant defeated Riley, 414 to 375, according to preliminary results that the city announced late Monday.
Standing outside the Seat Pleasant Activity Center, Riley said her supporters were in shock, some of them crying. She said that she planned to call Grant to congratulate him and that she hopes that he will do his best for the city.
