Former Prince George’s County executive Rushern L. Baker III said he is endorsing Prince George’s County Executive Angela D. Alsobrooks (D) in her U.S. Senate bid, the second high-profile endorsement Alsobrooks has received this week.
The announcement by Baker, a two-term county executive who is a veteran figure in Maryland politics, comes just a day after Alsobrooks secured the endorsement of Rep. Jamie Raskin (Md.), the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight Committee who rose to national prominence for his role in Donald Trump’s second impeachment trial and in hearings on the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection.
Baker said he’s putting his support behind Alsobrooks because it’s “the right time.” The winner of the May 14 Democratic primary will end up facing the GOP nominee, likely to be former governor Larry Hogan, in November. The general-election result could determine control of the Senate.
“I’m getting off the sidelines [because] this is a critical point for not only our state but our nation,” Baker said in an interview with The Washington Post. “With Larry Hogan jumping into the race, it became critically important that everyone do what they can to help make sure that we have a Senate that represents the type of state, the type of country that I want.”
