University System of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman is the highest-paid person on the state payroll — but, in a sign of the times, he just took a pay cut.
Perman said in September he would take a temporary 10% salary cut to help close a projected $500 million budget gap for the system in fiscal year 2021. According to the data from the Comptroller of Maryland, Perman was earning an approximate salary of $970,400 as of Aug. 1 — a month before the cut was announced.
Bradley Taylor, a heart surgeon and University of Maryland Medical School professor, is No. 2 on the list with an approximate annual salary of $954,500. Andrew Pollak, professor and chair of the department of orthopedics at UMd. Medical School is No. 3 with an annual salary of $898,900.
