Prince George’s County’s planning and parks functions are poised to consolidate into a new Largo headquarters, which their parent agency aims to buy from the University of Maryland Global Campus and renovate for a total price tag of up to $90 million.
With the move, agency leaders hope to make their operations more efficient, while also saving on the costs of building new offices from the ground up and spurring economic development in a strategic area near the Blue Line’s Downtown Largo Metro station.
The plans are being managed by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, or M-NCPPC, a state-chartered, bicounty agency that oversees planning, land use and public parks for both Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. The Prince George’s portions of the commission — its planning and parks departments and its planning board, which is an independent political body appointed by the local legislature — currently operate out of various locations the agency owns or leases in Upper Marlboro, Greenbelt and Riverdale. The M-NCPPC’s acquisition of the new buildings, pending a final green light from several government and other entities, would bring those scattered operations under one administrative roof.
