After a months-long nationwide search and selection by Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and then a contract negotiation with the board of education Prince George’s County Public Schools Superintendent Millard House II is now on the job.
This week House released a video message to students, parents and staff from his new office.
“I’m extremely eager to listen and learn from all of you on how we can create and help every student to achieve in the Prince George’s County Public Schools. There is no better place to do this work than right here with the world-class team of educators, students and families,” said House.
House comes from the Houston, Texas school district where a state takeover forced him out of the top job there. He won high praise for his work in Houston specifically for turning around low-performing schools.
In Prince George’s County, he’s facing a system whose own benchmark tests for 2022 show more than 75% of students across all grades are not meeting expectations in English/language arts. For mathematics, 95% are performing below grade level, with 6% of students meeting expectations in the first test given and only 4% in the second. Recent state MCAP test results show just 34% of students in 3rd through 8th grade scoring proficient in English and just 10% proficient in math which is next to last in the state.
