Metro is likely to avoid the service cuts and layoffs it was building into its budget due to new funding provided by the American Recovery Plan, agency officials said Wednesday.
Officials with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said as much after the stimulus bill’s passage in the House. Greater Washington area transit agencies are expected to receive $1.4 billion from the American Recovery Plan. President Joe Biden is expected to sign the bill Friday.
“While it will take more time to work out all the details, including Metro’s exact share of this funding, the $1.4 billion provided by the American Recovery Plan for our region’s transit agencies will allow us to avert the painful service reductions and layoffs that were on the table,” Metro Board Chair Paul Smedberg said in a statement.
