More than $2 million worth of fuel may be missing, according to an internal review from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.
The Office of the Inspector General conducted an audit of WMATA’s controls and accountability of fuel for non-revenue vehicles and found that there were over 1.17 million gallons of unaccounted fuel transactions.
OIG said it could validate these transactions because current and former employees could easily pump fuel into unauthorized vehicles using codes that would make the transaction appear valid.
