Adventist HealthCare has secured $10 million from the state of Maryland to help kickstart construction of the new hospital it intends to bring to Prince George’s County — just a fraction of what it’ll need to make the project happen.
The Gaithersburg health system is seeking $150 million in state funding over time to replace its existing Fort Washington Medical Center, more than half of the future facility’s expected cost of roughly $250 million, FWMC President Eunmee Shim told me.
“Adventist HealthCare is committed to the project of a new hospital, but we can’t do it alone,” Shim said. “I don’t think there’s any other way to describe it than to say, funding is a big part of what we need.”
Adventist is trying to raise awareness about its need for that capital at the county and state levels. That has included partnering with County Executive Angela Alsobrooks — who has made health care investment a legislative priority for 2024 — to request the financing from the state, Shim said. Maryland’s legislative session ended Monday.
