The senators from Maryland and Virginia have written President Joe Biden requesting the federal government resume the selection process for a new FBI headquarters in Greater Washington, picking up where the General Services Administration and other agencies left off before former President Donald Trump scuttled the endeavor in 2017.
Maryland Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen and Virginia Sens. Tim Kaine and Mark Warner, all Democrats, wrote Biden requesting the search resume with three sites under consideration — two sites in Prince George’s County and one in Springfield — as a potential replacement for the deteriorating J. Edgar Hoover Building in downtown D.C.
“We urge you to address the need for a new consolidated FBI headquarters,” the senators wrote in a Friday letter. “While we recognize that the previous administration’s actions were a setback for the project, we request that GSA and FBI finalize the plan as soon as possible, focusing the renewed effort on the sites previously identified as the top candidates.”
