Maryland officials are asking a regional transportation board to reconsider a plan to add toll lanes on part of the Capital Beltway and Interstate 270 in July in order to revive the stalled project.
According to WTOP, Maryland Deputy Secretary of Transportation Earl Lewis Jr. wrote Wednesday to the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board (TPB) requesting members take another vote on the plan July 21. He also outlined 15 transportation projects in Montgomery, Prince George’s and Frederick counties the state would have to either forgo or delay if the proposal to add toll lanes, and build a new American Legion Bridge, does not move forward.
The TPB on June 16 voted to exclude the plan, which entails working with a private contractor to build the new bridge and the toll lanes and connect them to Virginia’s toll lanes, from a list of regional transportation priorities. The move essentially makes the project ineligible for federal funding.
