The agency that oversees parks and planning for Prince George’s County recently acquired a vacant lot in Hyattsville, adjacent to the now-dissolved Beth Torah Congregation, as part of a larger assemblage slated to become a new “multigenerational” rec center.
The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, which oversees those governmental functions for both Prince George’s and Montgomery counties, bought the 2.1-acre wooded lot at 6710 Adelphi Road on Jan. 9 for $4.7 million. The seller was Dewey LC, a Hyattsville firm, which also owns adjacent land, including a parking lot where Bethesda-based developer Bald Eagle Partners LLC obtained approval in 2020 to build a 321-unit multifamily building with ground-floor retail.
Including its newest acquisition and the building purchased from Beth Torah, a synagogue, in 2014 for $1.875 million, the commission now owns five contiguous lots totaling about 5.3 acres along Adelphi Road, anchored at the southern end by the Prince George’s Plaza Community Center, a 1980s-era rec facility. The former synagogue and old rec center will be demolished, making way for a much bigger and swankier facility.
