Democratic leaders of the Maryland General Assembly announced Monday three policy proposals they believe will benefit the middle class, whether in the classroom, at the office or during their golden years.
House Speaker Michael E. Busch and Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller, along with key sponsors, presented their agenda at a news conference to address gender pay gap, college student debt and retirement savings.
Over 30 lawmakers crammed behind a podium with a sign: “Common Sense Solutions for Maryland’s Middle Class.”
“We want to give relief to middle-class, working families by lowering their college tuition, by making sure women get paid the same in the workplace, and three, (ensuring) that there’s an optional retirement program for people that are preparing to retire,” said Busch, D-Annapolis, “that they will have the money and the savings to be able to feel comfortable in their senior years.”
The Equal Pay for Equal Work Act is a proposal intended to prevent bosses from penalizing workers who discuss salaries. Supporters of the measure believe employees must be able to ask and talk about wages to know whether inequities exist in the workplace. The bill would also give the Attorney General the ability to get involved in pay discrimination complaints.
