Maryland’s casino industry continued to soar in May, setting a new single-month revenue record of $172.4 million.
It’s the second time in three months that the state’s six casinos have collectively set a revenue record, as the gambling industry emerges from the closures and restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic. As of May 17, capacity limits had been lifted on all Maryland casinos, though not all slot machine and table game seats can be filled under continued social distancing guidelines.
The limitations didn’t seem to make much of a dent on the casinos’ fortunes last month, with five of the state’s six casino properties reporting year-over-year increases compared to May 2019. (The report from Maryland Lottery and Gaming does not make comparisons to May 2020, during which casinos were closed due to the pandemic and did not generate any gaming revenue.)
MGM National Harbor posted a nearly 16% revenue increase for the month compared to 2019, hauling in $68.4 million — the largest total of the month.
