Events D.C. said Wednesday demolition of “major structural components” of RFK Stadium will be completed by the end of 2023.
The announcement from the District’s sports and conventions agency came a day after D.C. Fire and EMS workers responded to two small fires inside the stadium, which was formerly the home of Washington’s NFL franchise, D.C. United and two Major League Baseball teams but has been without a regular tenant since 2017. An investigation into what causes the minor fires is ongoing. Authorities said there was no significant damage to the structure.
Events D.C. said work is underway on the abatement of hazardous materials at the 61-year-old stadium and that should take several months.
Back in 2020, the agency awarded a $14.2 million contract to Providence, Rhode Island’s Gilbane Building Co. to demolish the stadium, but later rescinded the contract in the face of protests from losing bidders on the project. Events D.C. restarted the process in December 2020, but has not announced a new contractor to raze the stadium.
