Billionaire investor and Maryland native Josh Harris is bringing in more firepower to bolster his bid to acquire the Washington Commanders.
Basketball legend-turned-entrepreneur Earvin “Magic” Johnson has joined the Harris-led bid to buy the Commanders from longtime owners Dan and Tanya Snyder, according to multiple news reports.
Johnson, 63, is said to be one of the world’s richest current or former athletes, with a net worth of abut $630 million. The pro basketball Hall of Famer won five championships in 13 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, is the chairman and CEO of investment company Magic Johnson Enterprises and owns stakes in Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers, Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles FC and the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks.
Johnson was reportedly in talks late last year to acquire a minority stake in the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders and was part of Harris’ losing bid to acquire the Denver Broncos, who were sold in 2022 to a group led by Walmart Stores Inc. heir Rob Walton for a record $4.65 million.
