The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority’s board has unanimously backed more than 400 transportation projects spanning all modes, extending from Northern Virginia into D.C. and suburban Maryland, through 2045.
The long-range plan approved Thursday night totals nearly $75 billion in estimated capital costs — almost double the price tag of the previous TransAction plan finalized in 2017. Which projects actually receive funding will be determined in a separate process, through the authority’s six-year plan.
The authority receives funding through the commonwealth via regional fees and a percentage of local sales tax dollars. Its board votes on six-year plans to distribute funding to transportation projects that local jurisdictions submit for review — in July, the board voted to allocate $625 million in regional funding for 20 transportation projects.
