Johns Hopkins Hospital has received two state grants as it works to complete construction of a nearly $516 million renovation and addition to its East Baltimore campus.
The state Board of Public Works on Wednesday approved $11 million in funding to aid in the lengthy construction process for the renovation and addition to the former site of the Johns Hopkins Medicine Children’s Center on Monument Street. The renovations to the mostly vacant Children’s Center were originally planned to be complete by the spring of 2023, but the 440,770-square-foot project is now set for completion in June 2026. Construction began in 2021, according to a Hopkins spokesperson.
The children’s hospital at Hopkins moved in 2012 to the Charlotte R. Bloomberg Children’s Center, a $1.1 billion building on North Wolfe Street. The old building has sat mostly vacant since then with only research space, a cafeteria and a kitchen remaining at Monument Street. Hopkins considered simply demolishing the building, but a demolition would require the organization to completely vacate the space. The hospital chose instead to renovate the site and build a new tower to accompany the project on the site of the old Brady building, which was demolished in 2019.
The project will create 200,000 square feet of lab space with plans for a new facade, conference rooms and other spaces. The cafeteria and kitchen will remain in the building after construction.
