Howard University has topped its goal for research fundraising, reaching a record-breaking level in just one year.
But President Wayne Frederick isn’t stopping there.
In 2018, Frederick established Howard’s office of research, investing in staff and providing more graduate student funding, he said. He hired Bruce Jones as vice president for research, whose team then set a milestone goal for research funding: $100 million in grants and contracts by 2024. But in the fiscal year 2022 alone, which ended in June, the university hit $122 million.
Between 2017 and 2021, the university grew the output of its research proposals by 37%. Research funding for specific projects averaged just under $60 million between 2002 and 2012, and then began to grow drastically after 2019, with a 120% growth since then. In fiscal year 2020, Howard brought in nearly $66.7 million in research funding; in fiscal year 2021, it was nearly $93.8 million, the university said.
