Howard University has received a $1 million gift to launch a hub to advance women in leadership roles, the school announced Thursday.
The donation came from Jim Murren, former CEO of MGM International, and his wife Heather Murren, a former securities analyst from Baltimore, who were both present at the virtual announcement. The Center for Women, Gender and Global Leadership, will conduct research on women’s issues in the country and provide scholarships and find internships for students, the university said.
The center will also focus on mentoring opportunities, pairing successful women with students, said J. Jarpa Dawuni, an associate professor of political science who will lead the new initiative. It won’t just focus on Black women in the United States but also on advancing women of color in other countries.
“We believe we can produce a center that focus on students, that will engage faculty, that will service the local community and advocate for global awareness,” she said.
