House Democrats are looking to raise roughly $1.3 billion through tax and fee increases — and an online casino gaming market — to pay for lofty education and transportation plans and avoid cuts in Gov. Wes Moore’s proposed budget.
A portion of the taxes and fees would also go to shock trauma care in Maryland, which is facing shortfalls. State senators have also proposed new funding streams for the system.
Leaders in the state Senate and House of Delegates are aligned in their support for reforming Maryland’s public school systems and advancing transportation projects, like the proposed Red Line transit system in Baltimore, though they disagree about how to pay for them.
Both the governor and top state senators have said they won’t support tax increases this session, and legislation for online casino gambling, or iGaming, isn’t expected to advance in the Senate.
