The developers of National Harbor on Wednesday announced that $10 million in road improvements are underway in preparation for the MGM National Harbor opening at the end of the year.
The work— from road widening to adding new signage and new interstate access — aim to help mitigate some of the traffic generated by the gaming resort. Casino officials say there could be as many as 20,000 visitors on a good day, and National Harbor estimates that the weekly number of vehicles in the area could double, from the current 90,000 to 180,000.
Over the next few weeks, drivers in and around National Harbor will see some workers at 16 locations, and they should expect new signage to go up on the interstates and other roads alerting commuters about the upcoming opening, possible traffic delays, and new traffic patterns. The pre-opening construction itself could cause congestion.
