The Federal Railroad Administration has put forth its first concepts for a reimagined Union Station as it readies for work on the major downtown D.C. transit hub.
The plans were revealed in a presentation to the U.S. Commission on Fine Arts, which has review authority of development projects in the District. The modernization of the transit hub is being undertaken by Amtrak and the nonprofit Union Station Redevelopment Corp. and estimated to cost $10 billion.
The renovations include a new east-west train hall, new main passenger concourse, a new access zone for pedestrian circulation and skylights between H Street NE and the train hall. Drawings show how these new features would connect, including concourses along First and H streets with modernized tracks and platforms in the main train hall. Retail and amenities are planned close to the historic main building.
