Greater Baltimore lost 46 bank branches last year, the biggest one-year decline since the new millennium began.
The region has 610 branches as of June 30, according to data from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. The federal agency releases data annually about bank deposits and branches for the 12-month period ending in June. Overall, the number of branches in Greater Baltimore has decreased by 204, or 25%, since 2000.
Branch closures are nothing new as banks have consolidated over the past two decades and consumers have transitioned to banking digitally on their computer or their phone. The latest wave of closures, however, came during a year where the Covid-19 pandemic accelerated those trends.
