Former Maryland state delegate Melony G. Griffith will run to succeed longtime state Sen. Ulysses Currie, who is retiring after more than 22 years representing the 25th legislative district in Prince George’s County.
The 54-year-old Griffith commemorated her birthday on Monday with the official launch of a campaign that came as little surprise to fellow Democrats and political observers. She ran unsuccessfully against Currie in 2014 and was on the shortlist of candidates to succeed him when the senator said he would retire late last year.
In Annapolis, Griffith developed a reputation as a policy wonk who understood the vagaries of state budgets and complex issues such as health care. She started her career as a social worker and now is an executive with a community-based primary care service provider that runs clinics in some of the region’s most vulnerable communities.
Griffith will face off in the June 2018 Democratic primary against Dels. Angela M. Angel (D-Prince George’s) and Del. Darryl Barnes (D-Prince George’s), both of whom have openly expressed interest in succeeding Currie for more than a year.
