In its first full year, mobile sports betting in Maryland is expected to generate more spending from gamblers than the lottery and the state’s casinos, according to an estimate from the state Department of Legislative Services.
Mobile sports betting opened to Marylanders in November 2022. Between then and September of this year, bettors have spent about $3 billion on mobile sports wagers.
That amount will be roughly $4 billion by the end of the calendar year, according to an estimate from Michael Powell, director of the state Office of Program Evaluation and Government Accountability, part of the Department of Legislative Services.
Maryland bettors spent about $2.5 billion on the lottery and less than $2 billion on casino gaming in Fiscal Year 2022, which ended in June 2022.
