A project to transform an underutilized parcel into a large-scale new community linked to the Reisterstown Plaza Metro station moved closer to reality last week.
The revised preliminary plans for the Wabash Town Center at Reisterstown Plaza were presented to the Urban Design and Architecture Advisory Panel, or UDAAP, on July 18 and showed a change in a portion of the large campus off Northern Parkway in West Baltimore. The emerging transit-oriented project at 6300 Wabash Ave. will add close to 900 residential units to the area and build on a sweeping overhaul underway in nearby Park Heights that includes a remake of Pimlico Race Course.
Groundbreaking is expected to take place in about a year — if state and private funding for the development are committed. Funds for the planning are being paid through a $4.6 million transportation grant through the federal Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program.
A report outlining the overall “vision” for the 26-acre state-owned site was made public in late June. It showed aspirations to develop residential towers anchored by retail near Reisterstown Road Plaza by Wabash Development Partners, a team of private developers that include Ernst Valery and Dean Harrison. The project would also include a separate area with 72 market-rate townhomes for sale. About five acres of park and green space will also be included with a large “central park” created near the Metro station.
